New stars on the block: How dubbed versions of Hollywood hits are churning out heroes

She had to take over the reins of her mother’s studio, Sound & Vision, in 2012 following her sudden demise. Since then, she has seen almost every big Hollywood studio from Warner Bros to Disney upping its dubbing game in India.

Studios now have multiple volunteers willing to work at cheaper rates. This allows them to squeeze the dubbing budgets further. A senior voiceover artist charges between Rs 50,000 and Rs 2 lakh for the lead role’s dubbing for a Hollywood release. However, a lot of VO artists ET Magazine spoke to say the pay was twice as high just a decade ago when dubbing was a skill that needed to be learned and mastered through practice and not via digital tools on the editing table.

In case a studio decides to get a celebrity actor to dub, the budget is increased in the name of marketing to expand the movie’s audience base. Amitabh Bachchan, Nana Patekar, Shah Rukh Khan and Varun Dhawan have dubbed for Hollywood movies.
